who saw the movie the girl next door (2004)? remember how they ended up making a pretty realistic sex-education tape at the end? high -five 19 year old boy with a hottie ex-porn star gf! i digress… sex education is an interesting topic not only in america, but around the world. i grew up in the bible belt, yet i still learned about both abstinence and birth control. we were taught that abstinence is the only way to totally prevent pregnancy. but i still remember that banana. there has been a lot of debate about teaching more birth control as opposed to abstinence in the schools. i think this is great, but i do not think that sex-ed teachers should be abstinent with their teaching of abstinence. nevertheless, it is hugely important to show and teach the importance of birth control. however, there may be other education options…

recently, the spanish socialist region of extremadura released a new, progressive plan for sex-ed: “pleasure is in your own hands.” you know, im not totally sure what they are ultimately trying to teach their youth. do you think that they are trying to show youth that they could masturbate instead of having sex? isnt masturbation considered sex by some religions? could masturbation really fulfill the need for sex? over take it even? i doubt it. so really, extremadura… i condone you for teaching your youth to know their way around the sex scene. i think ill be visiting extremadura in about 10 years. (what? am i allowed to say that?)

indian thanksgiving

so, my sister did some geneology research last year (or a couple years ago now?) on my mother’s side of the family, which we really did not know anything about. it was interesting! on my dad’s side, we knew the heritage of at least our great-grandparents, and generally our great-great grandparents. however, my mother’s side was always a blur– and still is to a degree. what we found out was that lots of my mother’s family marked “mulatto” on their census reports until that option was removed from the report in 1930. although “mulatto” is a racial slur now, back then it meant a “mixture of races,” which generally involved american indian. !! i could see the indian in my mother’s side… my grandfather’s summer farmer’s tan was unbelievable. and he had very little arm or leg hair (should i notice that? its a trait though!) so now we can prove it! kind of. and that information mixed with my father’s grandmother being an american indian, along with the other grandparents hugely not being american, my sister and i, half jokingly, consider ourselves “other.” i dont really think it matters, but i get to check a different box now!

i was glancing through this week’s someecard newsletter and saw this one. however, it was just a thumbnail when i first saw it. i didnt understand the message… so i clicked on it. when i saw it was an indian, and literally fell over on my couch laughing (is it awkward to laugh so hard while at home alone?). SO not okay. again. but funny. i just dont know what i think about non-PC jokes, but im obviously embracing them… for now though, enjoy.

so last weekend i was in new york city partying for halloween. great time. however, sunday morning i was feeling… not my best. i was travelling uptown wearing the same clothes from the night before (dont worry, i shacked with a friend). walking in the same heels that i had been wearing for the greater part of 24 hours. i couldnt get the subway i wanted because of marathon sunday. i really was not chipper, although i was not in an especially bad mood.

i walk past this man who tried to hand me a CD. i said, “no, thanks.” literally what ran through my mind was “what would i do with one of your CDs? im not in the music business, and it would probably snuggle into the depths of my purse for weeks before i remember it.” well, that was not really okay with the artist. we then stopped at a street corner and the man comes up to me and says, “its all about the undertones. our former president jimmy carter said it… its all about the undertones.” i was totally taken aback. i think my response was something like, “i dont know what you are trying to infer, so why dont you say it a little more clearly.” i wanted him to accuse me of racism so badly because that was obviously what he was trying to do. and it was one of the most ridiculous accusations that i have ever heard. he responded with something about the “undertones” and how i am obviously unhappy with life because i cant let go of my issues. i couldnt believe my ears. how ridiculous? nevertheless, i didnt know this reference to jimmy carter, so i obviously had to do some research today.

i was right! the man on the street was accusing me of being racist. how ironic that he becomes the radical in this situation instead of me.

i almost posted this to my roommate’s facebook… but i really just think its too racist. although it makes me laugh, im really not sure what i think about it. references like this, though slight, really just might be what keeps racism so alive throughout our society. given, there are MUCH worse ideas than this that keep racism alive in some parts of our society. anyway. today is not the day for racism analysis. it is just a day to share a laughable yet controversial someecard.

i was at a nationals baseball game last season and a friend of mine and i were speculating about the batters’ personalities based upon the song played while they walked out to the plate. this, naturally, led to a discussion about what songs we would walk out to if we had the opportunity. i definitely have not figured mine out yet, but last week i was really into two songs:

1. polite dance song by the bird and the bee
i love the bird and the bee. and i like how this song begins (“give it up for me please”)… and certain lines (“would you be nasty with me?”). however, you should watch the music video. its seriously creepy. and i love it. especially the last minute. i cant embed it because of drm laws (do you like that reference, fellow publishing students?), but here is the link:

2. fire it up by modest mouse
this is a possibility solely because the bass beat in the opening can be kicked up and its kind of badass. but really, its only about the bass beat. i have ALWAYS wanted to be that car you can hear a mile away by their bass beat… i cant help it. i love heavy bass. here is a link to the song… i could embed it, but its really not a great video in any way. and it sounds a lot different on my computer and ipod after a little EQ adjustment:

of dogs and men

i was going to quit this blog because i really dont have a lot of time to write, nor do i have much to write about (at least that can be public ha!). but then i realized that my 3 hour thursday night class is the perfect time to create blog entries! however, this one is really just a disjointed thought that i had this morning while walking my dog. im hungover, btw.

so there was another dog in the elevator this morning while i was taking mims out for his morning walk (kind of morning). it was a boxerish mix, decent size, good personality. but i just didnt really think that it was that cute. i started to wonder if i only like dogs that are cute? do they have to be fluffy and smiling? maybe. but i also like big dogs that are fun and sweet. i found myself thinking, “it just depends on their personality.” wait… what? but, isnt that what i think about men? its not how they look, its how they act. im talking about men. and dogs! isnt it ironic that i would create the same ultimate opinion of dogs and men? not to mention… my sister describes her fiance with the same characteristics as i describe my dog. sometimes it is awkward. im not sure if its more of an insult to the fiance, to my dog, or to me. haha. so while you are thinking about that cute dog, liken her/him to a man. i swear… there will be similarities.
